PLANTS AND PHYTOCHEMICALS AS POTENTIAL SOURCE OF ANTICANCER AGENTS

Abstract: A large number of bioactive compounds exist in various species of plants .Different types of extracts from different parts of plants have been screened for their anticancer activity in- vitro and in –vivo test models. Novel anticancer agents are being sought from traditional medicines. At present many plant derived drugs (Vinca alkaloids-vincristine, vinblastine, vindesine; Taxol—paclitaxel, docetaxel) are in clinical use for treatment of various types of cancers. This review describes a number of plants and their products possessing anticancer activity.
