Background: The purpose of the study was to assess the gingival zenith position and line and compare in the angle’s class I occlusion, pre and post orthodontic treatment casts of the maxillary anterior dentition. Material and methods: A total of 15 individuals comprising of 180 sites were divided into 3 groups (pre-orthodontic treatment, post orthodontic treatment and control) with an average age of 20.6 years. The anterior dentition of the maxillary casts in all groups were measured using the calibrated digital caliper for the clinical parameters i.e., (1) Gingival zenith position and (2) Gingival zenith line. The difference was analyzed by comparing the groups using independent sample t-test and paired t-test. Results: On comparison of pre and post orthodontic treatment groups, there were change in mean values of central incisor from 0.95 to 0.7mm, lateral incisor from 0.58 to 0.3mm and canine from 0.4 to 0.15mm. The difference was found to be statistically significant. Also, on comparison of control and post orthodontic treatment group, the difference was found to be not statistically significant. Conclusion: An ideal gingival zenith position and line is very important in achieving favorable esthetics and this determines the long term prognosis of most of the periodontal esthetic procedures in the maxillary anterior dentition.
