Controlling the reproductive parameters of the broodstock particularly the sperm quality of the males is essential for the selection of strains in aquaculture. The aim of this study is therefore to select high-performance male broodstock with a view to increasing fish production. Sperm characteristics of 10 males from each of Nile tilapia population from Kou valley lake and Tengrela lake were evaluated using a computer-assisted sperm analysis system (CASA). Parameters were evaluated in three different fields at 15, 30 and 45 seconds after sperm activation. Results showed that sperm concentrations ranged from 4.42 1.51. 109 4. 28 1.35. 109 spermatozoa/mL and were not significantly different between the males of two populations. The percentages of total motility (96.63 2.32 % to 86.23 11.69 %), curvilinear velocity (44,88 10.51 um/s to 19.89 6.90 um/s), straight line velocity (27.09 8.46 us to 10.99 6.19 um/s) and average path velocity (29.70 9.75 um/s 11.28 4.60 um/s) decreased at 45 s post activation but also showed no significant difference between males of the Kou population and those of the Tengrelapopulation. The total number of spermatozoa was, however, significantly lower in males of the Tengrela population (0.28 0.12.109 spermatozoa) due to the low volumes of milt produced by these males.Motility durations were higher in males of the Tengrela population (3.54 1.14 minutes) compensating for the low sperm production for reproductive success. All the results on the different parameters evaluated are very satisfactory and allow us to conclude that males of the Kou and Tengrela population of Nile tilapia have good sperm quality. These males could thus be introduced into breeding systems to improve fish production in Burkina Faso.
