Introduction: Rapid population growth and increasing demand for milk and meat have led to the emergence of a new and rapidly evolving livestock farming system in the peri-urban area of the Bamako district. Indeed, a large number of farmers are interested in cultivating fodder crops for livestock feed, without any idea of the profitability of this activity. While fodder crops are cultivated in many tropical African countries, their widespread adoption presents challenges, even though farmers demonstrate a genuine desire to produce fodder. On the ground, it is clear that cultivation is insufficient, given the small size of the cultivated areas, and the resulting yields, despite being of high quality, do not meet the needs of the population. The objective of this study is to analyze the economic profitability of the production of fodder cultivated according to the practices of agro-pastoralists in the peri-urban area of the Bamako district through the establishment of operating accounts.
Materials and Methods: This study aimed to analyze the economic profitability of forage production by agro-pastoralists in the peri-urbain area of the Bamako district by establishing operating accounts. Fifteen agro-pastoralists were randomly selected from the study area. Of these 15, 4 producers of forage legumes (cowpea, mucuna, and dolichos) were chosen, one from each production category. The collected data were analyzed and presented in the form of operating account tables.
