A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING ESSENTIAL NEWBORN CARE PRACTICE AMONG PRIMI MOTHERS AT SELECTED HOSPITAL, SALEM

A descriptive design with quantitative research approach was undertaken to assess the knowledge of the primi mother regarding essential newborn care in VMKVMCH, Salem. 30 primi mothers were selected by convenient sampling technique and data were collected by closed ended knowledge questionnaire. The findings revealed that, the highest percentage (56.7%) of primi mothers were between age group of 21-25 years. Most of the primi mothers (93.3%) of them were nuclear family. Highest percentage (33.3%) of the primi mothers educational statuses were diploma. Highest percentage (36.7%) of the primi mothers were laborer. Highest percentages (83.3%) of the primi mother were Hindu regions. Monthly income shows that highest percentage (53.4%) of the primi mother had family income between Rs 10,000 - 20,000, it shows that primi mother were from low socio economic group. In pre test, Percentage wise distribution of primi mother shows that 23 (77%) had inadequate knowledge, 7 (23%) had moderately adequate knowledge and (0%) had adequate knowledge. In post test, 26 (87%) had adequate knowledge, 4 (13%) moderately adequate knowledge and (0%) had inadequate knowledge. Before administering knowledge information, the mean score was 18.06+_ 4.19 and after administering knowledge mean score was 28.77-+1.13 and the mean improvement score was 15.23(50.77%). at p<0.001 level the measured paired t test value of t=46.010 was found to be statistically highly improvement. This clearly suggests that there is a formal training on neonatal care practice.
