The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing what many call a new mining boom, comparable to past gold rushes, but centered on copper, cobalt, coltan, lithium, and tin - all vital for the global energy transition. International institutions and neighboring countries have often facilitated or profited from this extraction, turning the Congolese economy into one of resource plunder rather than sustainable development. This boom, however, has devastating consequences: violence, theft, sexual assaults, pillaging, and the abduction of local populations. Communities are treated less as human beings and more as commodities, echoing the historical slave trade, where African lives were reduced to market value. In this context, the very notion of human rights seems sidelined, as dignity, security, and development are sacrificed for global demand and profit.
