Cognitive impairment is a decline in thinking, knowing, remembering, judging, problem solving, imagination, perception, and planning. Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is a neurovirulent virus which induces cognitive dysfunction both directly and indirectly. The present study aimed to evaluate cognitive functions in elderly patients with chronic HCV infection. All subjects included in the study underwent neuropsychological assessment using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Wechsler Intelligence Adult Scale (WIAS) tests, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A). An evident low score was reported among HCV elderly patients regarding MMSE and WIAS tests in comparison to normal control subjects. On the other hand, an evident high score was reported among HCV elderly patients regarding HAM-D and HAM-A tests in comparison to normal control subjects. HCV patients showed significant cognitive impairment with psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety in comparison to normal control subjects.
