Title: sCD147: EMMPRIN(extracellular matrix metalloprotienase inducer) as tumour marker for bladder carcinoma Background: A new marker sCD147 also known as (EMMPRIN extracellular matrix metalloprotienase inducer), tumor collagenase stimulatory factor (TCSF), Hab 18 G, OX- 47, Neurothelin, Basigin is a cell surface protein which is broadly expressed on human peripheral blood cells, endothelial cells, cultured cells of hemopiotic and non hemopioticorgin. In T cells its expression level is dependent on differentiation state. Thymocytes strongly expresses sCD14, significant expression of sCD147 has also been reported in neoplasms of urinary bladder, liver and lung. Study Design: Hospital based prospective study Aim: To evaluate the clinical signifance of sCD147 as a tumor marker for the diagnosis and postoperative follow up of patients suffering from bladder cancer. Method: Serum samples collected from 33 bladder cancer patients in preoperative and 3- 5 months postoperative period were subjected to solid phase enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on sandwich principle and serum concentration level of sCD147 was compared between preoperative and postoperative. Results: Mean preoperative and postoperative sCD147 levels were compared and showed significant results(p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded from this study that sCD147 levels are high in bladder cancer patients and decrease after resection (TURBT) to significant levels at 3-5 months. Thus sCD147 could be one of the prognostic factors in bladder carcinoma as is described in other studies too, and can be a useful marker in the postoperative period in patients with bladder carcinoma.
