Abstract

Our first order analysis on Shannon Wiener species diversity index and hydrological parameters of the three bheries located in East Kolkata Wetlands indicates the index to be a potential indicator of water quality. The value of the index is highest where the dissolved oxygen is maximum and nutrient load is minimum as seen in case of Natur Bheri. The picture is vice versa in case of Munshir Bheri where the Shannon Wiener species diversity index has the lowest value. It is also observed that the environment is congenial in all the three bheries during premonsoon compared to monsoon season (except Munshir Bheri in case of seasonal variation of Shannon Wiener species diversity index.).
