Abstract

Background:- Computed tomography (CT)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is regarded as a rapid, safe, and accurate diagnostic tool in examining thoracic mass lesions. Aims: To assess the role of CT-Guided FNAC in thoracic mass lesions, to analyze the results, and to compare the results with other studies. Materials and Methods: Fifty-five patients were studied over a period of one year (Sep 2011 to Oct 2012) for their age, sex, radiological findings and cytological diagnoses. Results: Sensitivity of CT guided FNAC in our study was found to be 92.5% and specificity as 100%. Diagnostic accuracy of CT guided FNAC was quite high at 94.2%. Positive Predictive Value was 100% and Negative Predictive Value, 80% Conclusion: CT guided trans-thoracic needle aspiration cytology using a 22 gauge spinal needle is a highly sensitive and specific technique with a good diagnostic accuracy and can be used safely as an outpatient procedure in the diagnosis of thoracic lesions.
