Abstract
Fish scales a globally available natural waste material was used for determination, preconcentration and removal of Mn(II) and Cd(II) from Bahr Yousief and underground water. The results clearly demonstrate the effect of important experimental parameters on the sorption process. The effect of biosorbent dose, shaking time, pH, initial metal ions concentration and sample volume were studied. Modification of Nile tilapia fish scales using cheep and safe sod. acetate resulted in enhancement of the removal capacity of the fish scales than the unmodified one. The capacities of the detergent treated fish scales are estimated to be 76.5 and 133.2 mg g-1 for Mn(II) and Cd(II), respectively. While the capacities of Sod. acetate modified fish scales are estimated to be 126.1 and 154.6 mg g-1for Mn(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The high adsorption capacity of Nile tilapia fish scales places this biosorbent as one of the best sorbent materials for the removal of Mn(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous effluents. The results confirmed relevant analytical parameters which enable the feasible applications of this method in analyzing natural samples. This study indicated that the novel modified fish scales presents high affinity for Cd(II) and Mn(II) ions.
