Binary complexes of Fe(III), Cu(II), Pd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) with alizarin red S, and Cu(II), Co (II) and Ni(II) with alizarin red S (ARS) and cysteine (Cys.) amino acid (ternary complexes)have been investigated in solution using spectrophotometric method. The composition of the complexes was determined to be 1:1 and/or 1:2 (M: L) for binary complexes, and 1:1:1or/and1:1:2(ternary complexes), the optimum conditions favouring the formation of the coloure complexes were studied extensively; the stability constants of the complexes were calculated. Adherence to Beer\'s law was observed for the µgmL-1 concentration range from (2.49- 52.84 µgml-1). Moreover, the solid complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, electronic spectra, thermal method (TGA and DTA), FT-IR and X-ray powder diffraction. The antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their complexes have been studied by screening the compounds against Aspergillusniger, Alternariaalternata for antifungal and Escherichia coli (-ve) and Bacillus cereus (+ve) for antibacterialand results have been compared with the standard drug.
