Abstract
The objective of this study to evaluates different theories and approaches related to the women and development discourse in chronological order starting with the welfare approach and examines their contention to address gender inequality in the world and explore the implication of approaches for the gender-equitable society. The idea of women's agency, autonomy and empowerment are being used extensively in the literature. In this study, an attempt also has been made to convey a clear perception of these three notions.
