Abstract
The oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula glutinis TISTR5159 performed the utilization of pineapple waste hydrolysates for growth and lipid accumulate. Pineapple waste hydrolysates were prepared with hydrothermal pretreatment and dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Along with the high content of hemicellulose and cellulose, pineapple waste can be hydrolyzed into fermentable sugars. The results demonstrated the high yields of xylose (12.3 g/L) and glucose (10.7 g/L) in pineapple waste acid hydrolysate. Thus, pineapple waste acid hydrolysate presented the highest yield of cell dry weight (7.28 g/L) and lipid concentration (3.4 g/L or 46.7%). The fatty acid profile of R. glutinis lipid were dominated by long chain fatty acids, in particular C16 and C18 (palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid). Lipid produced by R. glutinis could be a valuable alternative raw material for the biodiesel production.
