Abstract
Introduction: Intubation &extubation are important steps in GA. This study aims 1.Frequency of recall of discomfort on extubation. 2.Patients first recollections of time place, person on emerging from GA
Method: Patients eligible for inclusion were aged ≥20yrunderwent GAwith tracheal intubation and extubated in OR.Anaesthetic induction, maintenance, emergence and tracheal extubation were performed. At induction patients were given analgesia (fentanyl), Anesthesia (propofol), and neuromuscular blocking agent (rocuronium). Maintenance of anaesthesia was with inhalational (sevoflurane) . Epidural anaesthesiawas performed inaddition with GA for abdominal/thoracic surgery.During the post-anaesthesia rounds on POD1,patients were asked 1.If they had any memories regarding extubation 2. What was their first recollection on emerging from general anaesthesia. 3. Answers were given spontaneously without prompting, if not clear the answer was recorded as unclear.
Results: Recall of discomfort during extubation was uncommon.Only 3.1% of patients recalled the extubation process. The first orientation to place was most commonly in transit to a ward.
Conculsion:From this study,Recall of discomfort during extubation is rare, most patients may not retain any memory of extubationprocess. This information is used to reassure patients & guide extubation practices by anaesthetists.
