Abstract

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common issue in elderly patients, particularly those with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Enterobacteriaceae, often resistant to multiple antibiotics, are the most common pathogens in such cases. This study aims to assess the prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae in elderly diabetic patients with UTIs and explore gender differences in resistance patterns.

Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted at the Padmashree Diagnostic Center in Bengaluru from December 2023 to May 2024, involving 84 participants aged over 60 with T2DM for more than 10 years. Midstream urine samples were collected and processed using the VITEK 2 system for pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software, with significance set at p < 0.05.

Conclusion: This study highlights the high prevalence of MDR Enterobacteriaceae in elderly diabetic patients with UTIs, with significant gender based differences in antibiotic resistance. Continuous surveillance and tailored treatment strategies are necessary to Manama this growing issue effectively.
