Abstract
Indian music represents one of the worlds oldest continuously evolving art traditions, grounded in sophisticated aesthetic theories, philosophical foundations, and oral pedagogical systems. This paper critically examines Indian Music in Global Perspective through an interdisciplinary framework that integrates ethnomusicology, postcolonial theory, globalization studies, and cultural diplomacy. It traces the transnational circulation of Hindustani and Carnatic classical systems alongside devotional, folk, and popular traditions, analyzing how Indian music has moved from localized sacred and courtly contexts to global concert platforms, academic institutions, and digital networks. The study foregrounds the historical processes that facilitated this global dissemination, including colonial encounters, orientalist scholarship, diasporic movements, state-sponsored cultural exchange, and intercultural collaborations during the twentieth century. Particular attention is given to the global reception of foundational concepts such as raga, tala, improvisation, and the metaphysical relationship between sound (nada) and spirituality, and how these have influenced Western art music, jazz, and contemporary world music practices. The paper also interrogates the institutionalization of Indian music in global conservatories and universities, examining issues of transmission, notation, and the transformation of the guru shishya parampara within modern pedagogical frameworks.
