Abstract

Music has historically played a transformative role in Indian society, functioning not merely as an art form but as a powerful psychosocial force. This paper explores music as a psychological catalyst for social transformation, focusing on its role in developing emotional resilience and strengthening community cohesion. Drawing from principles of social psychology, positive psychology, and cultural psychology, the study examines how collective musical experiences such as festivals, devotional gatherings, and community performances enhance emotional regulation, shared identity, and collective efficacy. Music facilitates emotional expression, reduces psychological distress, and promotes adaptive coping mechanisms, thereby contributing to individual resilience. Simultaneously, shared musical participation nurtures trust, empathy, and a sense of belonging, reinforcing social bonds across diverse socio-cultural groups. In the Indian context, where music is deeply embedded in cultural and spiritual traditions, it acts as a medium of unity, transcending boundaries of caste, class, gender, and region. The paper argues that music-driven engagement can serve as a sustainable socio-cultural intervention for community development and social harmony. By integrating psychological insights with socio-cultural realities, this study highlights musics potential as a developmental resource in contemporary Indian society.
