Abstract

The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, operated by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI)under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), represents the technological cornerstone of Stage II of IndiasThree-Stage Nuclear Power Programme.This paper presents a comprehensive technical study of the PFBR encompassing reactor core physics, the three-circuit sodium thermal-hydraulic architecture, passive and active safety systems, fully digital instrumentation and control (I&C) design, and the complete electrical power generation and grid integration chain from the 588 MVA synchronous generator through the 400 kV Southern Regional Grid interface. The Methodology section details the analytical treatment of the reactors breeding process, thermodynamic energy conversion pathway, shutdown mechanism diversity, and electrical subsystem design. Results and Discussion presents key design parameter data, a quantitative comparative analysis against conventional coal-fired generation, and an assessment of the PFBRs grid stability contribution. Indias PFBR, with a breeding ratio exceeding 1.05 and near-zero lifecycle CO2 emissions, is conclusively shown to be a strategically vital, environmentally superior, and technically mature baseload power source that bridges Indias Uranium-economy to its vast Thorium reserves.
