Abstract

The objective of the present work is to evaluate the performance of five species of plants traditionally used for the establishment of hedge in Northern Cote d Ivoire to ensure their extension into agroforestry. Pretreated seeds of five species (Acacia nilotica, Bauhinia rufescens, Citrus aurantifolia, Ziziphus mauritianaand Ziziphus mucronata) were either sown directly or reared in sachets and then planted. Parameters like germination rate, length of plants at different times, rate of fruiting and survival rate of the stand were measured. At the same time, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted among the populations to identify some uses of these plants. The germination rate of these five plants is high for all the seeds of the species in the laboratory than in the station. At six months, in general, the height of plants grown in sachets is higher than that obtained by direct seeding. At 19 months, this trend is fading. For the silvicultural characteristics, the survival and fruiting rates as well as the average heights obtained are satisfactory. These plants are used in the pharmacopoeia, food and feed, use as firewood, service and work. Ownership of hedgerows by farmers would necessarily be possible by quantification and especially by the valuation of products that it produces.
