A STUDY TO COMPARE THE OUTCOMES OF TYMPANOPLASTY AND TYMPANOPLASTY WITH CORTICAL MASTOIDECTOMY IN MUCOSAL TYPE CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA

Background: Chronic Otitis Media (COM) is a persistent inflammatory condition of the middle ear, leading to significant morbidity, particularly in developing countries. The optimal surgical approach for inactive mucosal COM remains debated, with tympanoplasty alone often compared to tympanoplasty combined with cortical mastoidectomy. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of these two surgical techniques in terms of graft uptake and postoperative discharge. Aims and Objectives: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of Type 1 tympanoplasty alone versus Type 1tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy in patients with inactive mucosal COM, focusing on graft uptake rates and the presence of postoperative discharge. Methods:A prospective study was conducted among 42 participants aged 18-40 years diagnosed with inactive mucosal COM. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=21) underwent tympanoplasty alone, and Group 2 (n=21) underwent tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy. Postoperative outcomes, including graft uptake and discharge, were assessed at 2, 4, and 6 months. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 23, with a p-value <0.05 considered significant.
