Abstract
Background: Photovoltaic–battery planning for university campuses must account for lecture schedules, cooling demand and vacation periods, which shape both the timing and the magnitude of electricity use. When metered consumption records are unavailable, equipment inventories and annual energy balances alone cannot establish whether solar generation coincides with demand or how much storage is needed. A chronological assessment is therefore necessary to compare energy coverage, backup requirements and surplus generation. This study examines how academic calendars, differences between weather years and combined operating losses affect these trade-offs for twelve teaching rooms at a Sahelian university campus. Methods: For twelve teaching rooms in Maradi, Niger, inventory-based demand was combined with hourly solar-model outputs for 2022 and 2023. Three calendar scenarios and finite battery energy and power limits were compared using native-time reconstruction, with separate 2023 timing diagnostics. Joint tests combined lower conversion efficiency and auxiliary demand, with additional scenarios incorporating either reduced usable battery energy or declared cleaning schedules.
