Abstract
Pyomyositis is a primary infection of striated muscles occurring most commonly in healthy men. It is most commonly reported from tropical countries and is responsible for 1 to 2% of surgical admissions in some tropical countries. The disorder is rare in temperate zones, but with increase in incidence of human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) , the disease has recently been recognized with increasing frequency. Pyomyositis has rarely been reported from India. The signs and symptoms of the disease are usually less specific and high degree of suspicion is required for the diagnosis. MRI is a sensitive and specific imaging modality for early detection. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism responsible for the disease. Treatment consists of surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotics.
