Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda represents a major constraint to cereal productio n in Burkina Faso. Due to the limitations and environmental risks associated with chemical control, the use of natural enemies constitutes a promising and sustainable alternative within an integrated pest management framework. This study aimed to inventory the natural enemies associated with S. frugiperda during the dry and wet seasons in western Burkina Faso. Field surveys were conducted from January to December 2023 in the Guiriko and Tannounyan regions using the W sampling method. Spodoptera frugiperda eggs and larvae were collecte d from farmers fields and then raised in the laboratory in order to identify the parasitoids. Predators were collected directly from the field and preserved in 70% alcohol before identification. A total of eight parasitoid species were recorded, predominantly Hymenoptera and Diptera. Entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes were recorded only under wet season conditions, inducing larval mortality rates of 1.81% and 11.87%, respectivelyas well as a high diversity of predators. This information provides an important scientific basis for the implementati on of biological control and integrated management strategies adapted to local agroecological conditions.
