Abstract

Woodcraft activity is a widespread practice in the forested communes of Faranah. The present study aimed to map the various actors in the wood value chain in this region. Two modes of exploitation were considered: artisanal chainsaw logging (the most common) and mobile saw operations. These data were processed and analyzed using Excel spreadsheets and IBM SPSS Sigmat Plot software. Individual surveys and focus groups were organized and conducted in the Faranah region. From this analysis, it emerged that the resource is obtained from customary landowners, some operators have a cutting permit, while others engage in the activity illegally. The analysis of the data collected in the four prefectures of the Faranah region highlights several major findings. Firstly, the education level of actors in the wood value chain is generally low. This reflects a workforce that is unskilled and heavily dependent on traditional practices. Secondly, the identified categories of actors are diverse. The largest active margins are concentrated in Faranah (147) and Dinguiraye (91), indicating a more intense commercial dynamic in these localities. Thirdly, the modes of access to trees reveal a predominance of payment of a fee (84% of cases), followed by free access (15%) and direct purchase (less than 1%). Fourthly, the study of timber yield per tree shows a strong concentration around 3 to 4 planks per tree.
