Abstract
Background: Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants (-5 mm), generated from the degradation of plastic products, direct industrial and consumer sources. Human exposure predominantly occur through ingestion and inhalation, with dermal exposure also reported. Their detection in human biological specimens has increased concern regarding potential effects on human health including inflammation, oxidative stress and endocrine disruption. Despite high public awareness of plastic pollution, corresponding preventive lifestyle and dietary practices remain inadequate in the general population. Ayurveda emphasizes preservation of health through appropriate Ahara, Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Sadvritta, hygiene and community awareness. This review evaluates microplastic exposure pathways and synthesizes a preventive framework derived from Ayurveda.
