Abstract
Muscle tissue is essential for maintaining strength, mobility, posture, metabolic functions, and overall physical health. Contemporary nutritional science highlights the importance of adequate protein intake, essential amino acids, micronutrients, and physical activity for muscle growth and preservation. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive and holistic perspective on muscle health through the concept of Mamsa Dhatu, one of the seven fundamental body tissues responsible for structural integrity, locomotion, and physical endurance. According to Ayurvedic principles, the nourishment and maintenance of Mamsa Dhatu depend on efficient digestive and metabolic processes governed by Agni, proper tissue formation through DhatuPoshana, balanced Doshas, and the intake of wholesome and nourishing Ahara.Unlike the modern view that primarily focuses on nutrient consumption, Ayurvedaconsiders muscle nourishment as the result of a sequential transformation of nutrients from Rasa Dhatu to subsequent Dhatus, culminating in the proper formation of Mamsa Dhatu. Impairment of Agni, Dosha imbalance, inadequate nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, excessive physical exertion, chronic illness, and aging can adversely affect muscle development and maintenance.
